Fiction-Non is a documentary series curated by Beyza Boyacioglu at Maysles Cinema (New York), which explores ‘hybrid films’ that cross the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction traditions. The first Fiction-Non series took place on January 10-12, 2013, featuring Bart Layton’s Imposter, Clio Barnards’s The Arbor and Carol Morley’s Dreams of a Life. In these films, the use of cinematic reenactments and lip-synced dialogues blur the line between non-fiction and narrative storytelling.
The second iteration of the series took place on September 25-26, 2013 and featured Lynne Sachs‘ Your Day is My Night. Your Day is My Night is a provocative hybrid documentary that begins with the stories of a Chinatown “shift-bed” apartment, as told through dreams, movement and song. Both evenings’ screenings began with a short live performance in which four cast members from the film performed an experimental movement piece exploring the basic human need for a place to sleep.
